SAVINGS TIP :: Reduce Your Grocery Bill

I hadn’t realized how many different types of debt out there there are. Holy cow, every time you turn around, someone’s trying to get your money and interest. It’s like, “Wow.” So now, we are going to do a segment on different ways to save money.

I think we all intellectually know that we should be saving money, but there’s a big difference between what we know we should be doing and what we actually do. So that’s really what a coach can help you with, but that’s beside the point.

There’s all these different ways we can strategically save money. The first one is getting out of debt. Now that’s the biggest one. The second one, which is a high ticket item in most people’s budget that can probably be whittled down a little bit, is saving money on groceries. Now I went through with the last video some things you can cut out like the fancy granola bars and fruit snacks and those sorts of things. Not that I’m a hater on fruit snacks or granola bars because I love them like everybody else too, but they can really add a lot to your total groceries for the week or every two weeks, whenever you go and not really add a lot of nutritional value to your budget. So one suggestion I had that I’ve been using recently too, is online grocery shopping.

I know in COVID world, before COVID happened, none of us could fathom that we would sit on our couch at home and grocery shop, but that is a huge tool to use to really stay accountable. Then that way, you’re not smelling all the beautiful food and whenever they bring the samples back and seeing all the colors and the glimmering lights and all the different things and like, “Oh my gosh, they looks so good.” You can really just go through your list, add the items to your cart and either schedule a pickup, or if you live in town or a metro area, have them delivered. So that’s really a good way to keep yourself accountable to your budget. It’s really just a way to enforce your grocery envelope.

Another way, if you do want to go into the store, that reminds me, is to use an envelope. You physically use an envelope going to the store with say, $200 cash, whatever you decide. As you add items to your cart, keep the calculator on your phone and total it up because nobody wants to get to the checkout and realize they don’t have enough money. But that’s a really, really good way to keep yourself accountable, to only go in the store with X amount of cash, that’s what you spend and then you’re done. Now, this takes some figuring out as you’re learning how to budget and learning how to save. How much do you need? What does your food actually cost?

I challenge you to go to the store the next time and only buy items that add nutritional value to your diet or your family’s diet and really think about all these different… Eliminates a lot of those, like I said, snacky type, sugary stuff, and fruits, vegetables, meat, all those different things, and just see what it cost when you just buy bare bones, if you will, milk, eggs, meat, veggies, fruit, that type of thing. Let me know how that goes. I would love to hear your experience with going to the store with an envelope. So drop a comment below and let me know how it went. I’ll see you next time.
